ONLINE TRAINING
Join George for one of our ever popular online science filmmaking courses suitable for anyone wanting to get to grips with communicating their research, project or enterprise. Our learners are enormously varied, ranging from PhD students, doctors, to entrepreneurs and science communicators.
This all-day Zoom course takes elements from our in depth 3-day residential workshop and is broken into three parts:
Pre-production,
Production
Post-production
We will teach you how to plan and write films, how to gather material to make films, including recording remote video interviews, how to edit films and get them seen.
George is an ex BBC documentary filmmaker with 20 years experience in science filmmaking and a natural, engaging teacher. We promise you plenty of time to answer your burning questions, non-intimidating practical exercises and a brilliant set of course notes!
These sessions are capped at 10 people to ensure a quality learning experience and can get oversubscribed. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

TESTIMONIALS:
“George Chan is a thoroughly engaging instructor. He deconstructs what can be an intimidating process, and you’ll come away with an excellent blueprint - from pre-production planning to the final polish and dissemination - for your next film. Beginners will be inspired to dive in, and more experienced filmmakers will learn new tips and tricks. This course can offer value to everyone - whether it’s someone making short videos on their phone, or a whole team including writers, videographers, and editors. Be prepared for a fast-paced, fun day of interactive learning!”
“This course is packed full of theory, practical and technical knowledge, hints, tips and recommendations from start to finish. George somehow managed to make attendees feel as if we were in the same room together, rather than tuning remotely in via Zoom. As a communications professional, I found the pre-production aspects particularly interesting but have now gained the technical knowledge and confidence I need to produce, shoot and edit my own work. The creative possibilities at my fingertips now feel endless – thank you George!”
“An extremely informative course that touches base on key aspects of filmmaking – but from the perspective of a science communicator. As a PhD student I’ve attended my fair share of training courses and I genuinely think this was one of the, if not the, best one I’ve been to.”
“George is a enthusiastic and engaged teacher and provided two excellent bespoke courses for our arts and humanities researchers. He is extremely generous with sharing knowledge and insider tips and gives very practical and informative advise. Condensing all the aspects of filmmaking for Research in one day was a true feat and he really demystified the process and left attendees feeling well informed and inspired!”
“This was one of the most useful, information-packed yet fun workshops I’ve ever attended! George took our team from complete novices to feeling that we understand the fundamentals and have some terrific reference materials for making short science films.”
“The course is a very informative and accessible overview, providing you with the basis for shooting and editing your own videos. George is approachable and helpful, does a great job at fitting the key points about video making into a single day, and delivers the material online very effectively.”
“Great overview of all steps needed to create a professional looking piece. Well thought out with great guidance.”
“I really enjoyed the online course and would highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn more about filmmaking and improve their skills. The day was well organised with excellent delivery. George is very experienced and knowledgeable so was great to learn from him and ask questions. The resources provided were valuable and detailed. The mix of teaching and practical sessions worked well to walk you through the steps of film making.”
“I thought the course was an excellent overview and primer of the main steps in putting together short science films. I found the section on which shots to film for composing sequences particularly helpful. The course materials were very useful for showing how this would be done in practice. I learnt a lot more about interviewing technique than I expected, which I really enjoyed and I think will be very useful in the future.”
“As Managing Editor of Ecography, I often help our authors to communicate their research via social media. This course gave me additional tools to make short videos for authors. I gained understanding in film-making theory as well as how to shoot films and what to think about when interviewing researchers. In addition, I learned how to edit film material in film-making software, and with simple tools, make a film look really professional. I highly recommend this course!”
“Really comprehensive - packed a lot of useful information in an accessible, engaging way. Offers great foundations to get you going in filmmaking”
“Exactly the right amount of information covering all possible aspects of film-making”
“I’m a biologist, and it’s important to talk not just to your peers, but to the public. What was great about the course was it covered all the stages of film-making in a week, and we got a good idea how to make effective movies that we can use in our jobs.
The teacher’s background and effective communication skills were very important in conveying such a huge amount of information in just one week.”
“I didn’t really understand all of the steps involved in making a short documentary. Before the course and with my science training I would have probably prepared something descriptive and boring. The tricks for effective storytelling of scientific results in a video documentary were really useful and the techniques for shooting and editing videos were foundational to me. You basically leave the course with the knowledge and skills to start preparing your own videos. ”
“The course is perfect for beginners and will give you confidence to go away and start making short films. The pace is easy to follow in a fun and friendly atmosphere.”
“The course takes you through all the stages of filmmaking from story design to editing. It is delivered by an expert in a well structured and engaging way and is suitable for beginners through to those with more experience.”
“An excellent overview of the various stages involved in creating good science films. Hands on demonstration with an expert tutor really helped to crystallise the huge amount of information and theory provided.”
“Having a focus on science films and discussing challenges on the content side (how to present science in an appealing and interesting way) was very helpful for me.”
“If you have a good foundation in communication theory and want to expand this into film-making then take this course. It will show you from start to finish everything you need to have in place to make a film. ”
“An excellent introductory course on science film making that managed to put as much into a single day as one possibly can.”
“George was a knowledgeable, friendly and approachable instructor who took time to address participants individual questions throughout the day. We learned a lot about how to think about and plan a film before you even start shooting. This is extremely helpful for beginners who have an idea but may feel overwhelmed by the thought of making a film. More practical and/or technical aspects of filming and shot selection were demonstrated and explained with detailed video tutorials that I personally found incredibly useful.”
